Brown's Daily Word 10-19-12

Praise the Lord for all His blessings and for His gifts and all His benefits. After I shared yesterday that have started listening to classical Christmas music, one of our friends wrote back saying she has started listening to glorious Christmas music. It has been balmy and beautiful. Though the colors of Autumn are slowly fading the joy of it all still lingering. Here we are just over two months away from Christmas. Praise the Lord that we can come to the end of year through All saints Day and Thanksgiving, for giving is one very important way to maintain a heart of gratitude. Giving back to the Lord is recognition of his provision for us. It is worship in every sense.

The First Phase of new addition to or church building here in Union Center
is complete. It looks very spacious and magnificent. The changes keep coming and the work keeps rolling onward. We are grateful to Jesus.
King David and his people were presenting an offering to the LORD for building a place of worship. When the people had sacrificed and brought precious items, gold, silver and other useful things, he offered a prayer of thanks to God. We find this prayer in 1 Chronicles 29:11-14. That last verse is really profound. Who are we that we should be able to give as generously as this? It is a humble confession that God is the source and we can only give to God what he has given to us.
Yes, what the people gave in offerings went into a temple that they would each benefit from. Yes, it was a physical token of a spiritual blessing. Yet, in their hearts it was a humble sacrifice of praise.
When the people of God were in need, the Apostle Paul went to the Corinthian church for an offering. He knew that this was a church that was exceptional in its spiritual giftedness, but he challenged them further. He said, “But just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7). He added that he was not commanding them to do this but appealed to their love for Christ. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Paul appealed to the example of Jesus as our motivation to give, in this case to brothers and sisters in need.. His appeal is still relevant today, perhaps to those who are proclaiming Jesus. If we become poor through our giving it would be a pale imitation of the generosity of our wonderful Lord. Jesus said, “Freely you have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

I heard a story shared by Tony Campolo in January, 1979. Tony Campolo told of being invited to speak at a ladies meeting. There were 300 women there. Before he spoke the president of the organization read a letter from a missionary. It was a very moving letter. In the letter the missionary expressed a need for $4,000 to take care of an emergency that had cropped up. So the president of the organization said, "We need to pray that God will provide the resources to meet the need of this missionary. Brother Campolo will you please pray for us?"
Tony Campolo, who is very outspoken said, "No."

Startled, she said, "I beg your pardon."
He said, "No, I won’t pray for that." He said, "I believe that God has already provided the resources and that all we need to do is give. Tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to step up to this table and give every bit of cash I have in my pocket. And if all of you will do the same thing, I think God has already provided the resources."
The president of the organization chuckled a little bit and said, "Well, I guess we get the point. He is trying to teach us that we all need to give sacrificially."
He said, "No, that is not what I am trying to teach you. I’m trying to teach you that God has already provided for this missionary. All we need to do is give it. Here, I’m going to put down all of my money I have with me."
He wrote, "I only had $15 in my pocket so I wasn’t too worried about that." So he put down his $15 and then looked at the president of the organization. Reluctantly, she opened her purse and took out all of her money, which was about $40, and put it on the table. One by one the rest of the ladies filed by and put their money on the table, too. When the money was counted they had collected more than $4,000."
Tony Campolo said, "Now, here’s the lesson. God always supplies for our needs, and He supplied for this missionary, too. The only problem was we were keeping it for ourselves. Now let’s pray and thank God for His provision."
The laws of nature show us that when there is an inflow it is beneficial to have an outflow. God has given us all that we possess including our lives. How does it flow out of our selves?

Jeff Jacoby wrote, “If you never give a moment’s thought to the fact that your health is good, that your children are well-fed, that your home is comfortable, if you assume that the good things in your life are normal and to be expected, you diminish the happiness they can bring you. By contrast, if you train yourself to reflect on how much worse off you could be, if you develop the custom of counting your blessings and being grateful for them, you will fill your life with cheer.”

Brown's Daily Word 10-18-12

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. The Lord blessed us with a beautiful Wednesday Evening gathering for fellowship and study. Alice and I walked after 9 PM. The star studded sky looked beautiful and brilliant. I was reminded by the Lord that He is upon His throne and all is well. I have started listening to classical Christmas music on Pandora on my Desk Top. When I shared with our daughter Laureen, one of the musicians in our family, that I have got a head start in listening Christmas music, she told me that she has also started listening to Christmas music. Good and Holy habits of mind and heart are infectious and very contagious.
During our prayer conference last weekend our friend Kelly Johnson shared about the act of "surrendering " to Jesus. When we come to Christ and surrender our lives to Him He gives us beautiful minds. In Romans 12:2 it is written, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).
Each generation seems to have its own way of looking at the world. Baby boomers, those born after World War 2, are a generation who optimistically push forward and reach for the American dream. Generation X, in contrast, tend to be cynical and cautious. The pattern of our generation is a good indicator of how we view the world around us.
Regardless of our "generation" we are instructed to “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). Paul said we should rejoice “always.” To rejoice is an action, not a feeling, and we choose how we are going to react to our situations.
About ten years ago CNN’s Larry King interviewed Billy Graham. For some time now Graham has had several health issues including his struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. When Larry King asked him how he felt about having Parkinson’s Disease, Dr. Graham replied, “I feel great about it. It’s been a wonderful experience. I believe the Lord has many lessons to teach me through this disease.” Dr. Graham was rejoicing in the Lord. Dr. Graham must have made it a habit to daily rejoice in the Lord. Even a disease like that which would bring down anyone’s spirits was a cause for Billy Graham to praise God. The Lord gives the gift of joy.
The attitudes of joy and gentleness help lay a foundation for growing a beautiful mind. The antithesis of these attitudes is anxiety. An expert once said that there are more people addicted to anxiety than to all the other addictions combined. It is written, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). We can worry or we can worship. It’s impossible to do both at the same time.
Rather than worry, Paul calls us to prayer. To pray is to worship God, to focus on his character and adore his attributes and his names. When we pray we also put before God those problems and needs, no matter how small, and we can get specific about the troubles we are facing. This is what it means to present petitions and requests before Him.
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). When God’s peace floods our souls it protects our hearts from wrong feelings and thoughts. The word “guard” means “to garrison” and it is a picture of soldiers protecting a camp or castle. The enemy is unable to get in when God’s peace protects us. A beautiful mind is a mind that has learned to cast our worries onto God and receive his peace. This is a mind that views life differently than the pattern of this world. Paul said, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).
Brian Bill commented on these verses saying, “God has packed a lot of good into this world and we need to fill our minds with that which is praiseworthy. God gave incredibly gifted Bach and Beethoven. God’s beauty is also demonstrated in art and photography, music, and even TV. Paul said, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). Literally, through the power of the Spirit, tell those thoughts they have no place in your mind and cast them out in Jesus’ name.
Warren Wiersbe said, “Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny.” This is how the process works: God gives the gift and we get to practice it.
The fruit of a beautiful mind is peace. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

Brown's Daily Word 10-17-12


Praise the Lord for the new day. It will be one of the ten best days of October. The fall foliage is still brilliant around here, as we had our first frost few days ago. Though many trees have shed their leaves, others are breaking out with brilliant plumage. We have had abundant Autumn rains. The trees of the fields and the hills and the meadows look sharp with brilliant colors.

We will meet for our Wednesday Gathering this evening at 6 PM for food, fellowship, and study, followed by the choir practice. We are studying the series by Bruce Wilkerson, "The Life God Rewards". The Gospel of Jesus Christ is an invitation to a life of JOY. It is a life that expresses itself in generosity. There is a story of two business men who were flying to a conference overseas. The small plane they were in developed engine problems and they had to crash land on a deserted island. One of the men began to cry stating that he will never get to see his kids grow up and never tell his wife how much he loved her. The other man simply leaned against a palm tree and fell asleep. His friend woke him and confronted him – “How can you sleep? Don’t you care that we are going to die on this island?” At this the calm companion said, “I am not worried at all. I make $500,000 a year and I always faithfully give ten percent to my church. I know my pastor will find me!”
Growing a generous heart involves understanding that giving without expecting something back is means of eternal investment. Paul expresses this in the verse: “Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account” (Philippians4:17).
Randy Alcorn said, “You can’t take it with you but you can send it on ahead.” If our hearts are in the right place we will have an eternal perspective about having a generous heart. It’s like the story of the sailor who was shipwrecked on a South Sea island. He was seized by the natives who carried him to their village and set him on a crude throne. They treated him as royalty. Soon he learned that their custom was once each year to make a man king, king for a year. He thought this was a pretty good deal until he started wondering what happened to all the former kings after their year was up. He found out that after the year, the king was banished to a deserted island where he starved to death. That worried him, but he was a smart king, so he put his carpenters to work making boats and his gardeners to work transplanting fruit trees and other crops to the island where he would be banished. His carpenters built a nice home there. So when his year was over, he was banished, not to a barren island, but to an island of abundance.
The point of the story illustrates a spiritual truth: what we do now with our earthly goods has eternal consequences for our eternal rewards. The greatest treasure is having a relationship with Jesus. Giving to others here and now shows that we want that eternal relationship with Jesus. Money that is given to help others is called fruit. Our gifts to others are encouraged by God, noticed by God and greatly desired by God.
Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt 6:19-21).
Someone has said, “God raises our standard of living so we can raise our standard of giving.” The act of giving isn’t only for the benefit of the recipient. By our giving we show God that our hearts are rich toward him. We show that we trust him with what he gave us in the first place. Giving is evidence of spiritual maturity as we grow into the likeness of Christ.

Brown's Daily Word 10-16-12

Praise the Lord for this new dawn. Sunday morning I walked to the church early in the morning while it was still dark. I heard a rooster crow for the first time in a long time. The rooster was announcing triumphantly the arrival of the new day. Alice and I walked briskly last night while it was cloudy and lightly drizzling. As we were getting home the clouds gave way to star studded sky, clear and glorious.

I was reading from Isaiah 47:13-15 (King James Version), "Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast labored, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee."
The late great American essayist, philosopher, and poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882), once said, "Hitch your wagon to a star." There are many who are hoodwinked by astrology. There are many who believe that their lives are guided, and even controlled, by the stars. However, using the stars to predict the future is contrary to the written word of God - One cannot believe in astrology and in Almighty God at the same time - for they are incompatible with each other! Only Almighty God can predict the future - for He is the Author and Creator of everything.
The New Living Translation (NLT), of Isaiah 47: 13-15, says: "You have more than enough advisers, astrologers, and stargazers. Let them stand up and save you from what the future holds. (v. 14) But they are useless as dried grass burning up in a fire. They cannot even save themselves! You will get no help from them at all. Their hearth is not a place to sit for warmth. (v. 15) And all your friends, those with whom you have done business since childhood, will slip away and disappear, unable to help."
Indeed our help comes from the Lord God Almighty! The Psalmist, David, tells us, in Psalm 124:8 (NLT): "Our help is from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth." We need to put a stop to Christians asking each other what sign they were born under! That is part of the pagan religion of astrology - a false God - idol worship - the thing of horoscopes - and, it has no place in the life of a believer. It’s not about you and what sign you were born under; it is all about Him, who He is, what He has done, and what He will do! And Our Lord the Bright and Morning Star, holds the key to the future - not astrologers - not horoscopes - not fortune tellers - nor divinators, they are all false gods! In Daniel 2:27-28 (NLT), we are told that Daniel told King Nebuchadnezzar: "...There are no wise men, enchanters, magicians, or fortune-tellers, who can tell the king such things. (v. 28) But there is a God in Heaven who reveals secrets, and He has shown king Neuchadnezzar what will happen in the future..."
Let us not get caught up in birth signs and horoscopes;let us get caught up in Jesus, the Christ! Let us Look to Him for the answers we seek! He will not steer us wrong!" Our Lord Jesus declares, "Ask, and you will receive! Seek, and you will find! Knock, and it will be opened unto you!" The Future Is Not In The Stars!

Brown's Daily Word 10-15-12


Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation. Indeed, He is the Author of our redemption. He is indeed the Fountain of our restoration. He blessed us with an incredible of weekend of the prayer conference. He blessed us beyond belief. It was a treat to have Sunita and Andy home, along with Rob, from Washington, DC, Kelly from Memphis, TN, and many from the Binghamton House of Prayer. It was great time for worship, praise, and prayer. So many came for prayer. It was great honor and privilege for praying for others. The Lord has challenged me to lead a life of greater praise and prayer in my personal pilgrimage. The whole weekend was refreshing and cleansing. It was invigorating. I am excited about Jesus our Lord and about serving Him with joy. Our Lord answers prayers. He offers us grace upon grace. He offers forgiveness full and free. Praise the Lord for all those who came to be prayed for.

Some of the highlights of the conference:

A Moslem man came with his family. He went forward to the altar and gave his life to Jesus Christ. One evening several children and youth came to the altar. They were anointed with oil and prayed for. One man came in a wheelchair, waiting at 4:30 PM to come in. The service started at 6 PM. He was brought in. He went forward to be prayed for. So many with so many needs and all types of bondage came to be prayed for. We are praying the Lord would continue to have His way in all of our lives.

I am sure most of you will remember the sniper incident that terrorized the Washington area a few years ago. Before they were apprehended the snipers had killed 10 and wounded 3. What you may not know is, prayer played a vital role in bringing that ordeal to an end. 50 Christian truckers got together to pray that somehow the sniper terrorizing the Washington area would be caught. Ron Lantz was scheduled to retire in a few days and did not even live in the area, but he felt sure that God would answer their prayers. In fact, he told the others attending the prayer meeting that God was going to use him to catch the sniper.
A few days after they began to pray Ron was listening to the radio as he was driving through the region and felt compelled to pull off the highway to a rest stop. It was just a couple of miles from where the initial prayer meeting had taken place. As he pulled in, he was shocked to see a car similar to what was being described on the radio. Carefully trying to read the license plate, a chill went up his back as the numbers matched. He quickly called 911 and remained there for what he said were the longest 15 minutes of his life, until the police arrived. He even pulled his truck across the exit, there would now be no escape for these elusive murderers. The rest is now history - the snipers were taken into custody without incident and the horrifying ordeal was over.
According to Jeremiah 33:3, we serve a God who gives incredible answers to prayer. Jeremiah 33:3 - "Call to Me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know." When people pray, God answers.
Phil Callaway did not know what to say when his young children asked if their Mommy was going to die. His wife, Ramona, suffered from horrible seizures.
Hundreds of friends and relatives prayed, but Ramona’s weight eventually slipped to 90 pounds. Medical specialists tried everything, but by the autumn of 1996, the seizures were occurring daily, sometimes hourly. Phil rarely left Ramona’s side. He wondered if she would even make it to her 30th birthday. One evening, when things looked utterly hopeless, Phil paced their dark back yard, then fell to his knees. "God!" he cried out. "I can’t take it anymore. Please do something!"
Instantly, a doctor’s name came to mind. Phil called the doctor, who saw Ramona the next morning and diagnosed a rare chemical deficiency. Within a week, Ramona’s seizures ended. Her eyes sparkled again. The miracle was so incredible, Phil says, "God gave me back my wife."
Jody Jamison was a new Christian, but she believed this. She was 500 miles away from home before the days of pop-a-lock, her car door was locked and she could not find the key. She had dumped the contents of her purse out three times in search of the missing key. She scoured the motel room where she had been staying for the past week, but still no key. In recalling the event she said, "It just hit me, if Jesus could save me, surely He could help me find my keys." Jody prayed, "Jesus, you know where my keys are, so please help me find them." Immediately she was prompted to look inside her purse again. Once again she dumped its contents on the bed and browsed through the disorganized mess. This time she noticed something shiny protruding out of a wadded up piece of tissue. Upon investigation, you guessed it, she found her key.
God’s provisions are greater than any problem we may have. Paul echoed this in his letter to the Ephesians when he wrote, "Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think; to Him be the glory." (Ephesians 3:20, 21).
During his 60 years of ministry, George Mueller never solicited funds from anyone. Instead he committed himself to pray and ask God for what he needed to keep the orphanage running. During his 60 years of ministry George Mueller kept a record of his prayers, & his prayer records filled more than 3,000 pages. His notes show that more than 30,000 prayers were answered. One night there was no food in the orphanage to give to the children for breakfast. At 3:00 in the morning a baker called him up and said, "I just can't sleep. I'm going down to the bakery to bake some bread. Would it be all right for me to bring some over to you this morning?"
On another occasion a milk truck just happened to break down in front of the orphanage on a day when they had no milk. The truck driver came in & said, "All this milk is going to spoil. Would you like some of it?" And their need was met.
Time & time again, 30,000 times in 60 years, God answered George Mueller's prayers.
In Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s Epic Poem IDYLLS OF THE KING, “Idyll 12: The Passing of Arthur,” King Arthur was dying. He spoke these inspiring words to his friend Sir Bedivere:
"I have lived my life, and that which I have done
May He within Himself make pure! But thou,
If thou shouldst never see my face again,
Pray for my soul. More things are wrought by prayer
Than this world dreams of. Wherefore, let thy voice
Rise like a fountain for me night and day.
For what are men better than sheep or goats
That nourish a blind life within the brain,
If knowing God, they lift not hands of prayer
Both for themselves and those who call them friend?

Indeed, “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.”
