Brown's Daily Word 1/7/11

Good morning,
Praise the Lord for this Friday morning. Sunday is just around the corner. While much of the nation is having a lot of snow we have had very little around here. It has been relatively sunny and bright over the past few days.
Our grandson, Simeon, had the first surgery of his life the other day. He called us and told of his experience, "Grandpa, Grandmom". We are praying for his full recovery.
Our first Saturday evening service of the year will be tomorrow at First United Methodist in Endicott. Coffee and fellowship begin at 6:00 PM and the service follows at 6:30. Aric Phinney and his team will lead the worship music, Earle Cowden will lead the service, I will bring a New Year greeting, and Dave Hettinger will bring the message.
On Sunday we will gather for worship in Union Center at 8:30 and 11:00, and the Wesley UMC will meet for worship at 9:30 AM. It is a great thrill to worship and serve our Lord with obedience and gladness. Plan to worship wherever you are this Sunday, the second Sunday of the new year.
I conducted a service of deathand resurrection for Catherine Collins last evening. She was born in 1910, that is, the same year in which Mother Theresa was born. She loved the Lord and she loved life. It was a great time of celebration of her life, her faith and her testimony. She attended Alfred, Buffalo, Cornell, and Syracuse Universities, getting a Masters's degree to teach Math. We praise the Lord for her.
Praise the Lord for the way that Jesus enters our lives, into our frailties, fragilities, and sinfulness. We find Jesus in the midst of people who feel unneeded, unloved, and unwanted. Within the core of every person’s life there is a little bit of hell... “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But thanks be to God that we have a Savior who "gets dirty" in the process of making us well.
Ministry involves meeting people where they are, and lifting them up to the Lord. It is not about judging them. To a sinner, to be invited into the household of God is a very healing thing. We need to keep this in mind as we go out into the world, fulfilling the Lord's command to make disciples of all nations. We are called to invite everyone in, no matter what their situation in life may be! We are called to bring hope in the midst of despair, and healing in the face of suffering.
Christ has the power to meet all our desperate needs and hopelessness because Christ goes where the suffering is. He is the Lord of the oppressed.

Luke4 : 14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
In Christ,
Brown

Brown's Daily Word 1/6/11

Good morning,
One of the most interesting disciples that I have studied is Matthew, the "Tax Collector", as he is known. Just like the other twelve, Matthew will proved that the Lord can use anybody that He chooses to accomplish His purposes. Jesus, the Son of God, the Creator of the world, wandered off the beaten path to the place where the tax collector's booth was located. As He stood there by the booth, Matthew saw Jesus and their eyes met. When Jesus looked at Matthew, he saw something beyond the tax collector booth because Jesus always sees something beyond what other people could see.
Jesus always sees potential, hope, and a future in our lives. He looks at us in such as a way that He sees things that we cannot see for ourselves. When Matthew got out of bed that morning he would have never dreamed that he would be one to be invited to follow Jesus, but the Bible says that as their eyes met Jesus said the strangest thing. He looked at Matthew and entreated him to "come be my disciple". Jesus looked at Matthew, the low life outcast of Israel, the lost one, and told him that He wanted Matthew to come and be a disciple.
Matthew arose immediately and walked away from his lucrative career (where dozens of people would like to have had his job), and walked away from that table, realizing that he would never go back to that table and that line of work again. He could not return because somebody was waiting in line to get that position. The Bible tells us that Matthew followed Jesus. He had been the lost one, the one that shouldn’t make the cut, but he instantly accepted the invitation and followed the Son of God. Jesus showed up specifically to select Matthew and Matthew then chose to go along with this rag-tag group. It is so amazing because they were so unlike the group he had associated with in the past.
Our Lord, still loves lost people today. He is not here to harass them. The Bible is not a book that assaults people that are outside of the flow and not in the church. We are not called to harass people but to love them and tell them they matter to God. Jesus said He had come with the purpose of seeking and saving that which was lost. Most people that wake up lost do not do it on purpose. They are preoccupied with life. and they may have been misinformed about Jesus. Jesus our Lord is in the business of calling people out of the world and setting them free, washing them clean, and sending them forth into the world to be about His business - the business of the Kingdom.

Blessed be His Name,

Brown

Brown's Daily Word 01-05-11

Good morning,
Praise the Lord for this first Wednesday of 2011. We will come together for our mid-week gathering tonight at 6 PM, with a meal prepared by Rodney Haines. We will studying a six week video course titled, " Becoming a Contagious Christian". The contributors for this course are Mark Mittelburg, Lee Stroeble, and Bill Hyblels.
The Choir will practice at 7:30.
I read the following story some time ago. . . In 1932, Robert McGimsey attended a Christmas Eve service in New York City and then headed back to his one-room apartment. As he walked the final blocks, he passed by the open doors of private clubs where people were partying with all their might. They didn’t seem to have a clue that it was Christmas Eve, and if they did, they didn’t seem to care. As he stepped over people who had passed out on the sidewalk, he thought to himself, “What a strange way to celebrate the birth of the most perfect Person who ever lived on this earth. People are missing the whole significance of His life.”
When he finally arrived home, he scribbled some more thoughts on the back of an envelope. His words formed the basis of a song, “Sweet little Jesus Boy, they made you be born in a manger. Sweet little holy Child didn’t know who you was. Didn’t know you’d come to save us, Lord, to take our sins away. Our eyes was blind, we couldn’t see, we didn’t know who you was.”
There are 7 titles to our Lord Jesus in the opening chapter of JOHN. John spoke of Jesus as:
1. THE WORD - vs. 1 & 14
2. THE LIGHT - vs. 5 & 7
3. THE LAMB OF GOD - vs. 29 & 36
4. THE SON OF GOD - vs. 34 & 49
5. THE CHRIST (MESSIAH) - vs. 41
6. THE KING OF ISRAEL - vs. 49
7. THE SON OF MAN - vs. 51

"The Ten Commandments contain 297 words. The Bill of Rights is stated in 463 words. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address contains 266 words. A recent federal directive to regulate the price of cabbage contains 26,911 words." - (Atlanta Journal) It would appear that the number of words bears no direct correlation to the importance and substance of the contents.
By contrast, in the Greek, John 1:1 contains 17 words which, according to one commentary, are the “most compact and pulsating theological statement in all of Scripture.”
Praise the Lord for the Truth of the Gospel. "The Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us." He is Emmanuel, God with us. The God who is Immortal and Invisible became visible and lived on earth as the Word of God incarnate. He dwells with His own who have trusted in Him, who have believed in His Name, and to them He has given the authority to become the sons and the daughters of God. We belong to the New Family. May we walk in His light under His authority and with fearlessness.

In Him,
Brown

Brown's Daily Word 01-04-11

Good morning,
Praise the Lord for His amazing grace though we often fail to comprehend it. We read in John 1:16, “From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.” God's message to us is one of mercy and grace.
Some of you might have read the following heart warming story. Every Sunday for the past 9 years members of the Landisville, PA Mennonite Church have prayed for a son of their congregation. Every month they send him a small sum of money, and every month some of them visit him. Prayer, money, and visits sound fairly typical for a care-giving church, BUT THIS SITUATION IS NOT TYPICAL AT ALL.
Nine years ago, after a meal with relatives on a calm Sunday afternoon, 14-year-old Keith Weaver killed his parents and his sister.
The horror of the crime and the loss of lives rocked the Weavers’ family, the church, and the community to the core. In the midst of their grief and disillusionment, however, members of the Landisville Mennonite Church got busy. They helped clean the house where the murders occurred, established a legal support committee to care for Keith’s needs so that the surviving brother and sister wouldn’t have to, and founded a “seventy times seven” fund to collect money for his expenses. They studied grief, forgiveness, and victimization in Sunday School and sermons, calling on the expertise of area chaplains and counselors. A year after the tragedy, they held a memorial service to lament the loss of their loved ones and TO RECOMMIT THEMSELVES TO THE JOURNEY OF FORGIVENESS.
Landisville Pastor Sam Thomas said, “Forgiveness is an act of God’s grace. You don’t forgive and forget. You forgive again and again and again.”
When I read this story about their forgiveness toward that young 14-year-old murderer I was humbled. In fact, I was deeply humbled and strongly humbled to think that they would do such a gracious thing. Praise to the Lord for His mighty grace at work in their lives!
As launch out to live our lives in 2011, in a world that is often cruel and harsh, may we become grace bearers.

In His grace,
Brown

Brown's Daily Word 01-03-11

Happy New Year!
The Lord gave us a wonderful weekend with mild weather, gentle sun, and friendly skies. It was wonderful to be in the Lord's House for the first Sunday of the New Year. Praise the Lord for times of corporate worship, when we provoke one another to love and to serve. Our friend Jack Black preached at first service. I preached second service and at Wesley. Thank you for your many greetings and notes.
Praise the Lord for my young friend Chris, who celebrated her 42nd birthday yesterday. I married Chris and her husband Fred, who are parents of three wonderful children. They love Jesus and serve Him. Praise the Lord for young parents who love Jesus, who desire to raise their children to love and serve Him also.
On December 27, Alice and I were privileged to attend the 100th birthday celebration of Catherine Collins, held at the Endicott Visitors Center. So many of her family and friends braved the blowing snow to come out and celebrate her very special day. She looked vibrant and vigorous. A few days prior she had written two cards for me - a Christmas card and a get well card. Grandma Collins had two weekly rituals. The first was to go every Thursday to Christopher's for pizza and wings. The second was to go every Friday to Long John Silver's for fish. Someone once asked her how the doctor felt about her eating habits. She replied, "What doctors? Most of them are dead." She lived in her own home, did her own laundry, and cooked her own food. On Thursday, after ordering her wings and pizza, she started to feel unwell. She was taken to the hospital, where she died late Saturday night. Praise the Lord for Mrs. Collins, who was a retired math teacher, who had taught for many years in the U-E district. She loved Jesus and she loved His Church.
Christmas is not really about family, and it certainly is not about gifts, but it is all about Jesus. During my illness, my wife and children "forced" me to watch only Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel. Rarely was the Christ of Christmas mentioned. One of my daughters has all of the Christmas episodes from "Little House on the Prairie", and in these it spoke of the birth of the Lord Jesus, and even quoted from the book of Luke. The central message of Christmas is the incarnation of Christ, that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." As it was prophesied in Isaiah, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given. And the government shall be upon His shoulders, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end."
As we enter the New Year, may we all be provoked to love Him, to worship Him, and to serve Him. May He who is The Mighty God make us fearless.

With much love and gratitude to all,
Brown
