Brown's Daily Word 9/21/12

Praise the Lord for another season that is upon us beginning tomorrow. Praise the Lord for the Church of Jesus Christ. It is always the season to serve the Lord. James MacDonald writes: “The church of Jesus Christ is not like a Target store. It’s not like you go, get what you came for, and then head home again. The church isn’t just about you getting what you need. It’s about you participating in what everyone needs. It is a community of families all working together so that the church can be all God wants it to be.”
Our Wedenesday Group has begun studying a series titled: "A life God Rewards". Come and join us each Wednesday as we engage in this powerful study.
There is a rather sobering Scripture, written by the apostle Paul that says, “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames” (1 Corinthians 3:11-15).

Paul said that there is a reward for being faithful and having good works that accompany our faith. Yet, even when we have done good works, they may have been done with improper motives — If so, our works will be burned in the fire of the judgment and count for nothing. We may be “saved”, but only as a scorched cinder. On the other hand, the commendable works we have done will be refined and come out like gold. If our desire is pure, and we desire nothing but carrying out the work God has given us to do and advancing his kingdom, there will be a reward. Paul says elsewhere, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you — unless, of course, you fail the test?” (2 Corinthians 13:5).
I was reading again what Paul wrote to the Romans, “Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:19-23). Just as we used to serve a master who led our lives on a path to destruction and ruin, now we are to serve God who gives life. We have been set free from our former life and serve a new Master who rewards us. The benefits and rewards of that life are not just in heaven, but here and now. We lead lives of holiness. We become agents of God to bring about his kingdom here on earth. We are given eternal life that begins now. Paul asks, “What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!” He said, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
What is the difference between wages and rewards? Wages are what you get from doing something. Wages are what you earn and deserve. Rewards are what you get that you do not deserve. Rewards are a gift. The book of Revelation declares, “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life” (Revelation 22:17). The good news is that we do not get what we deserve, rather we are given a gift, and it is life itself. It is a reward, not wages. It is a gift, not something you have earned, nor could you earn it even if you tried.
The book of Hebrews says, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” (Hebrews 6:10-12). We have an inheritance that has been promised. This scripture says that we are to show our love for God by loving people and helping them. This is how we inherit what God has promised.
Reverent devotion to the Creator and Redeemer of the world brings about human flourishing. The Old Testament talked of God’s Shalom. The Theological Word Book of the Old Testament defines Shalom as, “Completion and fulfillment — entering into a state of wholeness and unity — a restored relationship.” This is the reward that we have from God. It is peace, even when we face adversity, because it is a life not only connected to God, but woven into his life. It is the gift of purpose and meaning in our lives that brings joy. It is the gift of having a relationship with God, our Creator, Savior and Sustainer. Columba of Iona said, “Joy is the echo of God’s life in us.”
Joni Eareckson Tada, who was paralyzed in a diving accident as a teenager, knows something of sadness, suffering and difficulty. But in her book, When God Weeps: Why our Sufferings Matter to the Almighty, she wrote these wonderful words: “God is actually happy. Scan the Bible’s big picture and you’ll find that He is rapturously happy. He doesn’t just get by –– he flourishes... Nothing can satisfy an infinite being but an infinite being. The eternal Threesome revels together in a swirling dance of mutual love. The Trinity enjoys pleasure beyond comprehension... God, we might say, is in a good mood. He is not depressed. He’s not misery seeking company. God is joy spilling over... The full tank of love He enjoys is splashing out over heaven’s walls. He swims in elation and is driven to share it with us. Why? Simply, as he put it, ‘So that my joy may be in you.’” (John 15:11).
This is the story of Jesus, and it can be our story as well when we enter into a life with Him.

Brown's Daily Word 9-20-12


Praise the Lord for another brand new and beautiful day. The Lord blessed us with a wonderful Wednesday Gathering. The Food was delicious with an international flair. The current study, "The Life God Rewards", by Bruce Wilkerson was very thought provoking.

Praise the Lord for the life we have in and through Jesus Christ our Lord. Untold millions around the world who have put their faith in Christ have discovered the secret of this life. One of the early persons to discover this life was St. Paul, who met the Risen Lord on the Road to Damascus. Paul wrote, "...for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances" (Phil. 4:11). He continued, "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want."

One translation of these words from the Greek would be, "I have found the secret of life." Another could say, "I have been initiated through the experience of life to know how to be content."

Paul was a veteran of living through a great variety of circumstances. He said, "I can bear any extreme. I can get good out of the ups and downs of life. When I have a hungry stomach, I learn what it feels like to be without food. Through this, there comes a new discipline of body and mind. When I have a full stomach, I realize how much I have for which to be thankful. Every circumstance has its lesson to teach. When I look back over life, I see that somehow I have been brought through this all. I have learned much. I have much for which to be grateful."

Paul wrote, "for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." He went on to say, "I can do everything through him who gives me strength." The KJV puts it: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." There is a source of strength outside yourself which breeds your sufficiency. Both the Christian and the nonbeliever alike will have their ups and downs. The godless life has weakness at its heart. We and Christ together are always a majority!



True contentment is the capacity to live in the present, in a life based on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This, in essence, is risky living. Lloyd Ogilvie describes Paul saying his biography could be entitled, "Risky Christianity." Paul was willing to risk his safety and sacrifice his comfort for the sake of Jesus Christ. Paul saw the risk of Christian living as being one he could not afford not to take. He must take that risk. In the process, Paul uncovered the exciting principle: you and I are not really free persons until we are willing to lose everything. There is no true contentment until you are set free from the bondage of your possessions, your status, your reputation, and your goals.



Paul talked about suffering loss. He learned how to handle needs. He also knew how to live with more than enough. That's another risk. Sometimes success is harder to handle than is difficulty. Once we are rooted and grounded in Jesus, the True Vine, we can live abundance an in triumph. Blessed be His Name.

Brown's Daily Word 9-19-12

Praise the Lord for this day that we can live our lives in and through Christ our Lord who said, " I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly." We will meet for our mid-week fellowship and study this evening at 6 PM with full meal and then we will gather for Bible study at 6:30 PM. We will be engaging in an 8 week study named, "A Life God rewards", by Bruce Wilkerson.
When Paul met Jesus Christ the Risen One on the way to Damascus the Lord gave him new life, life abundant and eternal indeed. Paul stated in his letter to the Philippian church, " For me is to live is Christ and to die is gain". The phrase “to live is Christ" is a wonderful statement.” F. B. Meyer said that Christ is “the essence of our life … the model of our life … the aim of our life … the solace of our life … the reward of our life.” We live in Christ … for Christ … by Christ … through Christ … and from Christ. He is the beginning, the middle and the end of life. He is truly the Alpha and Omega, the A and Z, and every letter in between.

In the light of the Good News of Jesus Christ our Lord “Life is wonderful … and it’s going to get even better.” Paul uses the word "gain", a monetary term that means to make a profit on an investment. Instead of complaining about being in jail, he rejoiced that even in chains, he experienced the power of Jesus Christ in his life. Furthermore, upon his own death his current wonderful life would get even better. For Paul, the secret of life lived in Christ is that death would not put him in a cemetery, but it would usher him into a sanctuary. He knew that he would enter the presence of Christ at the moment of his death. That would truly be “gain” for him.
In his sermon on this text Alexander MacLaren gives the following answers:


1. We lose everything we don’t need—We lose the world, the flesh, and the devil. We lose our trials, our troubles, our tears, our fears, and our weaknesses.

2. We keep everything that matters—We keep our personality, our identity, and our knowledge of all that is good.

3. We gain what we never had before—We gain heaven, the saints, the angels, the presence of God, and Jesus himself.

Brown's Daily Word 9-18-12

Praise the Lord for this new day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. I had a very blessed and joyful Birthday celebration yesterday. I received birthday greetings from so many of you. I am blessed and very grateful to the Lord for all of you. I talked to our grandchildren. They had gone camping for the weekend. They got back home yesterday late afternoon. I talked to Micah, Simeon and Ada. When they gave the phone to Ada (20 months) she kept on talking. She was not willing to give the phone back to her mommy.

It is a great blessing to worship Jesus as our Lord and serve Him as our King. He invites us in to a life's journey in Joy. Somebody has said the Christian Gospel is an Invitation to Joy. Paul had discovered that life. In the midst of trials, tribulations, and intense persecution he lived a life of joy because He served the Jesus Christ, the Lord of Joy.

In the "Peanuts" cartoon Lucy asks Charlie Brown, "Did you ever know anyone who was really happy..." Before she can finish the question, Snoopy comes dancing into the next frame. As only Snoopy can, he dances his merry way across the frames while Lucy and Charlie watch in amazement. In the last frame Lucy finishes her question, "Did you ever know anyone who was really happy ... and was still in their right mind?"

We might want to ask that question of Paul. By the world's standards of happiness anyone who was in his position and in his right mind should have been miserable. He was in prison when he wrote the letter to the Philippians. He had lost everything. He was isolated from his closest co-workers and most intimate friends and, perhaps most difficult of all, he had no idea what the future might hold. He was waiting for the Emperor to decide whether he would live or die. By the world's standards, he should have been miserable, but with great audacity he declared, "Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I say, Rejoice!"

One of Paul's favorite words is the Greek word hilarotes, from which we get the word hilarity. It literally means "laughter from the heart." When Paul spoke of joy, he was not referring to the trivial, shallow, obscene, or mean-spirited stuff we call humor today. He meant a bone-deep, blood-rich, exuberant laughter which can only come up out of the depths of a person's soul - a joy which flows from the center of our being. It is a happiness coming from the depth of our hearts.

John 15:11 - "These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full".

Brown's Daily Word & BIRTHDAY!! 9-17-12

Blessings and honor to Jesus, who makes all things glorious. Praise Him for this new day. On this day many years ago I was born in a tiny village called Muklingia in Orissa, India, approximately 7000 feet above sea level. I praise the Lord for His countless blessings, ineffable love, and measureless grace. I praise the Lord for you all, for your friendship, affection, and love. Thank you each and every one around the corner and around the globe for birthday wishes. I am going to spend some time today reading, and listening to Handel and Bach. On my birthday I read again Psalm 103, one of my favorite Psams.
In Psalm 103 we find God's Catalogue of Blessings. There are 5 blessings we can especially praise God for:
1. He forgives our sins
2. He heals us from our diseases
3. He redeems our life
4. He crowns us with love and compassion
5. He satisfies our desires with good things.

Somebody has put it most aptly, saying, "If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the six million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death... you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead, and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace...you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. "

Just for fun let us look at what we are willing to pay in time of tragedy to restore something we are currently blessed with:

Gastrointestinal Surgery $15,000
Kidney Transplant $42,000
Liver Transplant $115,000
Bone Marrow Transplant $106,000

Again, remember the goodness of the Lord as expressed in Psalm 103. Our Lord God, forgives our sin. He heals our diseases. He redeems our lives. He crowns us with love and compassion. This is all made possible in the Person of Jesus Christ our Lord. He has given us true honor and great honor. He satisfies our desires with good things.

Brown's Daily Word 12-14-12

Praise the Lord for this new day in the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords and the King of kings. He is the Prince of Peace. Yesterday our oldest daughter Janice celebrated her birthday. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on a beautiful, brilliant September day. We praise Jesus for Janice, a sweet servant of Jesus and a wonderful mother to our grandchildren. She is also a very creative photographer with great imagination. Janice is loved and very blessed. We are very blessed because of Janice.
As a nation we are confronted once again fear of terror, senseless bloodshed, and the murder of innocent persons. We are confronted by the incredible flatness and secularity of existence and godlessness of our time.

Joseph Campbell, the mythologist, said in an interview with Michael Toms that the majority of his friends are living "Wasteland lives." Many of them, he said, "just are baffled; they're wandering in the Wasteland without any sense of where the water is -- the source that makes things green" (An Open life, pp. 66-67).

T. S. Elliott coined the term, "the wasteland". "The Wasteland" is a 434-line modernist poem by T. S. Eliot published in 1922. It has been called "one of the most important poems of the 20th century." Most of us can look around us and see that many are living in the Wasteland too. They are busy but they are not getting much out of life. They are like the children in John Ruskin's story about the rainy day. Because they were confined to the house by the rain, the children invented a game: they would see how many tacks each could pry loose from the overstuffed Victorian furniture. For the balance of the afternoon they all worked feverishly, prying and gathering. Then, when the sun came out and they could all go home, they left, each with his pocketful of tacks and the furniture in a shambles!

Ruskin meant us to see that the room is the world and we are all the tack-gatherers -- and that when it is over there is very little point in having won more tacks than the next person. In such a busy, Wasteland kind of a world, the Word of God, alive and Eternal, invites us to "Be still and know that I am God." The early church leader Augustine was once accosted by a heathen who showed him his idol and said, "Here is my god; where is thine?" Augustine replied, "I cannot show you my God; not because there is no God to show but because you have no eyes to see Him."
Elizabeth Elliott wrote in her Book, "Through Gates of Splendor", that when she learned about the brutal death of her husband, Jim Elliott, she sang in tears and hope, "Be still my soul. The Lord is on your side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to your God to order and provide. In every change He faithful will remain. Be still my soul. Your best, your heavenly Friend. Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end." (Jean Sibelius)
It is written "The Lord Almighty is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Come see the glorious works of the Lord. See how he brings destruction upon the world and causes wars to end thorughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear in two; he burns the shields with fire. Be still and know that I am God! I will be exalted in the nations. I will be honored through the earth." (Psalm 46:8-11)
In light of the assurance of our Almighty God’s triumphs we should take time throughout the day to be still and reverently honor him as the God of power, love, and sovereign control of all things. We can praise God that He constantly offers reassurance during troubled times.

David gave emphatic declaration of God’s Almighty power to overcome any calamity that may befall us. Perhaps the most famous verse in Psalm 46 is, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in the time of trouble." A refuge is a shelter that provides protection from all kinds of danger. When we seek refuge in God we are trusting Him to deliver us from danger and trouble. Too many people are seek refuge in their homes, possessions or in their abilities. Let us take the attitude of the song writer:
We can praise God that He constantly reassures us with His mighty power, presence, and promise. Take time to thank God for the fact that He reassures us with rock solid guarantees regarding our security. People who do not get reassurance or think they do not need it are setting themselves up for deep distress. God alone is able to make wars cease. He alone is able to give us the confidence to move ahead with His will for our lives despite the outward circumstances or our personal feelings of fear. We can ensure the fact that He will bring to pass His will and way for our life if we take Abraham’s attitude toward our challenge, "He staggered not through unbelief but grew strong in faith, being fully assured that what He had promised, He was able also to perform." (Romans 4:20,21)

We are having a very special worship service this coming Sunday which has been designated as the Back to Church Sunday. Plan to be in the House of the Lord wherever you might be. Let us worship the Risen Lord. When saints worship and serve Jesus Christ, the Risen One, Satan trembles.

Brown's Daily Word 9-12-12

Praise the Lord for this day after 9/11. We all can remember vividly where we were on that beautiful Tuesday morning 11 years ago when the events of that fateful day began to unfold. We were all in shock and disbelief, not knowing what to think. Was this an accident, or was it something planned? When the second plane slammed into the World Trade Center building there was little doubt that terrorism was involved. Then, when the Pentagon was hit, it began to dawn us that we were under attack. That week was like living out a scene in Dante’s Inferno. In the beginning there was shock and horror, but it seemed surreal, like watching a movie with special effects. It didn’t seem real, because things like this don’t happen here. This is the United States. . . Terrorism’s purpose is to create terror, and it did so in the hearts of many.
How do we react to living in an unsafe world? What is our response as Christians? From where or from whom does our security come? We draw our strength from a different source than those who do not know God. As the Scripture says: “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 124:8). He is our hope — nothing else is a sure and certain hope. The Bible says, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm” (Psalm 20:7-8). Our faith is not in our military power, our intelligence network, our economy and financial institutions, the power of our foreign alliances; our hope is in the Lord our God. The Bible says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade — kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:3-4). The Bible also says, “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever” (Psalm 125:1).

Security is not the absence of trouble, but confidence and courage in the midst of trouble; that confidence comes from our living Lord. Our confidence cannot be shaken, because we have a God who is in complete control of the universe. The earth may crumble and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, but we know that God is unchanged. We say, “I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (Psalm 16:8). Our security is in eternity, not in the present circumstances. Our confidence is not shaken even though the earth burns and its smoke rises. For the Lord says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10).
There are no guarantees in this life for any of us except the blessed assurance we have from our Lord Jesus. Frederick Buechner has written, “You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn’t have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don’t be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It’s for you I created the universe.” Life is not safe, but life is good. Life is good, because God is good.
The New Living Bible puts it this way: “Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or are hungry or cold or in danger or threatened with death? . . . No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35-39).
