Brown's Daily Word 9-17-10

Good morning,
Praise the Lord for this day the Lord has made. Today is my birthday, which I share with my twin brother Rodney Haines. Thank you for your greetings and goodwill. I am blessed beyond measure. Praise the Lord for His church and for His saints. It is a wonderful honor and privilege to serve Jesus as our Lord and King.
I am reading from Psalm 84 this morning, a song of pilgrimage, about going on a journey. Every Jewish male was required to worship at the temple at least three times a year if at all possible (Deut. 16:16). For many families, it was the highlight of the year, to be able to go to Jerusalem and see the sights and sounds of the big city, to be able to enter into the temple and see the splendor of it. Many traveled great distances and endured hardship to be able to make it to Jerusalem. The way was sometimes discouraging, so they would sing and worship as they traveled. This psalm is believed to be one of the songs that they sang to remind them, especially during the discouraging parts of the journey, of the glory of God’s house. This psalm is expressed with deep longing for the presence of God, to be in His house, to be in His courts, and to dwell in His presence is the object of this psalm. For many of them that traveled, it was like a homecoming, they would see family that had not seen for a while, but still the highlight was to be in the temple of God, worshipping and praising Him.
Outside of Jerusalem, was a valley called the Valley of Baca. Most of pilgrims had to pass through this valley to enter into Jerusalem. I have heard several ideas about the Valley of Baca, some scholars believe it was a garbage heap or a dump that the pilgrims passed by, while other scholars believe it takes its name from the Balsam tree. Balsam trees grow in dry places, so it is believed that the Valley of Baca was a harsh, dry, place that would test the patience of the pilgrims as they journeyed to meet with God. Such a valley exists between the Jordan and Jerusalem even today. The Balsam tree, at a certain time, weeps its sap. There is no doubt that this reminded the travelers of the tears that they themselves shed while on the journey. Baca also means "weeping" in the Hebrew language, so many see it as a place of great sorrow.
We also have our valleys of Baca that we pass through on our way to the new Jerusalem. When I read this psalm I am reminded of the story about an old country preacher who was asked his favorite part of the Bible. He replied, “My favorite part is that one that says, “and it came to pass”. Someone told him that didn’t make any sense, why not choose a passage like the 23rd Psalm, or the Golden rule. He replied, “Those verse are mighty good too, but I like “and it came to pass”. He was then asked what is so special about that verse. He said, “I know that whatever I go through, no manner how bad it is, that it too will come to pass, and I will make it through.”
Remember that we are each on a pilgrimage. Baca is not our home. II Corinthians 4:17 stataes, "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory".
Paul's words say that here our troubles, our valleys, are only for a moment, especially when it is compared with the eternal weight of God’s glory. That is what the pilgrims needed to remember while traveling through the Valley of Baca. They had to keep in mind the glories of God’s temple, and the joy of being in His courts. We must all keep our eye on the prize.
When traveling through the Valley of Baca, remember those mountain top experiences and the joy of being in God’s presence. Think about what it is like to be above the storm clouds and bask in the sunshine of His presence. Remember the promises of God, the providence of God, the presence of God, and the power of God.
David said that pilgrims make a well, or dig a well, while in the Valley of Baca, to refresh themselves so they can continue on their way. Sometimes what we have to do as we travel through the Valley of Baca is make the extra effort and dig down to find the refreshment that we need to make it through the Valley. We need to dig into the promises of God’s word. We need to dig into the presence of God in prayer. It is great to be in the temple, worshipping and praising God. It is also great to rejoice in the courts of the Almighty, but God walks with His own, even in the Valley of Baca. He desires that we seek Him with all of our heart. We need to dig deeply into the grace of God. I have seen again and again that when people go through great trouble and affliction, and when they dig deep, they get close to God. I have seen mothers whose husbands have left them alone grow stronger in the Lord, not allowing Satan to defeat them. I have seen those who have lost a loved one to death grow stronger and find more grace to continue for God. God’s grace is more than enough, and is still so even today for those who travel through their own Valley of Baca.
THE PILGRIM INCREASES IN STRENGTH IN THE VALLEY OF BACA. David said in verse 7 that they go from strength to strength. While we do not like valleys, it is in the valley that our faith is exercised, and we grow in strength. They go from victory to victory, from might to might. Every difficulty we must overcome means a higher strength to overcome difficulties until, finally, every obstacle is overcome and we enter in before the presence of the King. Every one that digs deep makes it to Zion, the holy city, to appear before the Lord. If we dig deep, God will give us the strength we need to make it through.
Isaiah 40:31 "But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

Brown's Daily Word 9-16-10

Good morning,
Praise the Lord for the fresh new day in which we can live, work, praise, and trust God to take care of the details. Autumn is upon us, and we can see the autumn colors begin to creep into our vistas day by day, and almost moment by moment. It is like a fire that begins to slowly consume the edges before it bursts into full flame.
We live in a world where hopelessness and despair get on the front page of the newspaper or in the central spot of the news shows every single day. We somehow get used to bad news. We would probably run out of things to talk about if the world was running smoothly, if people were getting along with each other, and if everyone had enough of the things they needed to live well, feed their families, and enjoy life. We cannot miss the events that are happening in our world. The secret is out: the world is an imperfect place. It is a place full of crisis and tragedy, full of anger and violence, full of despair and desperation. The world is, quite frankly, a mess. Our temptation is to begin putting our trust in the same people and things that the rest of the world trusts in. The world solves its problems through military actions, passing laws and resolutions, and putting its trust in its leaders to accomplish peace and bring stability. We have given this responsibility to mere people. We have learned to expect them to make the economy good, to prevent violence, to protect our families, to make us happy, to provide us with good jobs, and to make decisions about how we should conduct ourselves in the world.
In a very real sense, we have learned to trust our human leaders more than we trust God. Isaiah 31:1-3 reveals, “Alas for those who go down to Egypt for help and who rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord! Yet he too is wise and brings disaster; he does not call back his words, but will rise against the house of the evildoers, and against the helpers of those who work iniquity. The Egyptians are human, and not God; their horses are flesh, and not spirit”
There is only one God and He alone is in control of the universe. God alone holds the future in his hands. Because of this irrefutable, undeniable fact, while we look to our leaders for a little direction and encouragement for the things that concern us here, we must remember to put our full trust in our great and mighty God, the maker of heaven and earth, the one who created us, sustains us, and knows us better than we know ourselves. He alone gives us victorious life through our Lord Jesus Christ. Victorious life is rooted in an uncompromising faith in His mighty power. It is something accomplished in and through us because Jesus is alive in our hearts and so it gives Him all the credit and glory due his name for the visible results of his Holy Spirit at work in our hearts. This does not mean that we never face defeat, but that in the face of defeat we never stop trusting Jesus.
We need to live our lives as if Jesus is all we have. We need to be absolutely dependant on him in all things. He is our firm foundation and our sure refuge in the face of life’s storms. We used to sing that Jesus is all we need…now He is all that we have.
" See those people polishing their chariots,
and those others grooming their horses?
But we're making garlands for God our God.
The chariots will rust,
those horses pull up lame—
and we'll be on our feet, standing tall". Psalm 20:7 ( The Message)

"Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. " Psalm 20:7 (King James Version)

Brown's Daily Word 9-15-10

Praise the Lord for this new day. We will gather for our mid-week service today at 6 PM with a full meal. We will have Bible study and the children's ministry at 6:30 followed by choir practice at 7:30 PM. One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 34.
We live in a world where many people allow themselves to be limited by their fears of hurt, disappointment, or criticism. Many times we have to obey the Lord before we can feel delivered from our fears. David praised God and then experienced release from His fears. The Psalmist wrote, "I will extol the Lord at all times, his praise will always be on my lips." Praise helps us gain a new perspective when we are going through life's difficult circumstances. Praise of God’s Lordship over all aspects of life help us see that He is sovereign and His omnipotence is greater than any problem. When we focus on Jesus as the one who overcomes the world, we are given an increased sense of His empowerment, enabling, and courage. Jesus said, "Be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world." Praise God for His resurrection power that gives us the power, love and self-discipline to cast all of our anxieties upon the Lord and He will sustain us. He will never let us down.
David earnestly sought the Lord for a solution for all of his troubles and found deliverance from all of his fears. The Psalmist wrote, "I sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all of my fears." (Psalm 34:4). Whenever we feel afraid we can trust Him to provide whatever we need. He makes us adequate with His adequacy. He provides us with courage when we are feeling timid. He gives us the confidence to speak, articulating God's wisdom when we are unsure of what to say. He helps us face our obstacles with the assurance that we can do everything God asks us to do with the help of Christ who gives us the strength and power. (Phil. 4:13 - Living) The arm of flesh will always fail. Paul wrote, "I did not come to you with superiority of speech, but in demonstration of the Spirit and power so your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God."
God may not remove the afflictions in our lives, but He will provide us with sufficient grace so as to demonstrate His power through us. We must allow God’s power to be displayed through weaknesses as this will encourage the hearts of others to trust Him too. Whenever John Wesley felt afraid he would just pause to pray and praise God for the fact that He was still on the throne of heaven ruling all things well. Wesley wrote, "I have never known more than fifteen minutes of anxiety or fear. Whenever I feel fearful emotions overtaking me I just close my eyes and thank God that he is still on the throne reigning over everything and I take comfort in His control over all the affairs of my life.
Author Leo Buscaglia told a story about his mother and their "misery dinner." It was the night after his father came home and said it looked as if he would have to go into bankruptcy because his partner had absconded with their firm’s funds. His mother went out and sold some jewelry to buy food for a sumptuous feast. Other members of the family scolded her for it. But she told them that "the time for joy is now, when we need it most, not next week." Her courageous act rallied the family. Praise God for His deliverance in advance and He will deliver you from all your fears!

"Unbelief puts our circumstance between us and God, but faith puts God
between us and our circumstances." F.B. Meyer

Blessed be the Name of the Lord.

Brown's Daily Word 9-14-10

Praise the Lord for this new day. It is going to be brilliant and beautiful. Thank you, Lord, for the brilliant rain shower yesterday. . . my wife was looking for the rainbow. Praise the Lord for the way we can live day by day in freedom because of Christ Jesus, our Lord, who came, who saw, and who conquered.
In 1776 the great patriot Thomas Paine, wrote the following words about freedom: “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; ’tis dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed, if so celestial an article as Freedom should not be highly rated.” In this passage, Thomas Paine was saying that our Freedom as a people should always be highly prized, and likewise, the Bible tells us that our freedom in Christ should never be taken lightly.
Jesus said that He had been sent to “…preach good news to the poor. (The Father) has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed." Luke 4:18
Hebrews tells us that Jesus “… shared in (our) humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death— that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” Hebrews 2:14-15 Our freedom in Christ is a powerful thing and it has been bought at great price, the price of Christ’s death on the cross. Those who have made the greatest difference for God have often been those who have understood how precious their freedom in Christ actually is.
Please lift these friends in prayer before Jesus our Lord: Evvie Binder, Reed Barton, Gill Woodward, Gordon Glover (going in for surgery today), Linda Geer, Orpha and Irving Rosenbarker, Chris Simser, Jr. (deployed in Afghanistan), my brother Patel in India, my mom,
" I have had pain in my left side and back.I had a constant cough from June until recently and the cough left me with a torn muscle under my left rib cage, as well as pleurisy.I am in so much pain and it does not seem to be getting better.I am allergic to many medicines and most pain meds so we have not found anything that can handle the pain. Blessings Jan Coulbourne"

Good morning,
Praise the Lord for this new day. Today we celebrate the birth and life of our first daughter, Janice. Thirty-four years ago tonight she was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. She has been a blessing in our lives throughout all of these years. Last week Janice, Jeremy, Micah, and Simeon headed out on vacation, camping at Tully Lake in Massachusetts. I have selected from her vacation photos to share with you this morning.
I trust that you had a blessed weekend of renewal, and refreshing of the heart and mind. The Gospel reading for yesterday was taken from Luke 15. The Lord shared three parables of the lost and the found. He shared about the extraordinary joy that is in heaven when one sinner repents and comes home. When we look at the Scriptures we see our Lord coming down to earth as the Lord of Joy. He is the Joyful Jesus. In John 15:11,“These things have I spoken to you that MY JOY may remain in you, and that YOUR JOY may be full!” Proverbs 17:22, MY LIFE VERSE, states “A CHEERFUL HEART is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones!”
It is said that a child laughs 400 times a day on the average, while an adult laughs only 15 times each day. This is puzzling since laughter feels so good and is so good for us! NORMAN COUSINS used to say that laughter is so beneficial for your body that it is like "inner jogging." The Mayo Clinic has reported that laughter aids breathing by disrupting your normal respiration pattern and increasing your breathing rate.
2000 years ago, Jesus appeared on this planet and brought astonishing change in the quality of human life. He was unique! It set Him apart! He was fascinating! Remarkable actions were attributed to Him! He had universal appeal! He was very special, to say the least!
Luke 10, Jesus sent out the 72, two-by-two, and when they returned, they “returned with JOY…(v.17)” and “At that time Jesus, full of JOY through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth…”
Bruce Marchiano wrote in his book, In the Footsteps of Jesus, "Yes, Jesus smiled; yes, Jesus laughed. Jesus smiled wider and laughed heartier than any human being who has ever walked the planet. He was young. He radiated good cheer. Jesus was a man of such merriment, such gladness of heart, such freedom and openness, that He proved irresistible. He became known throughout Galilee for His genuine strength, the sparkle in His eyes, the spring in His gait, the heartiness in His laugh, the geniuneness of His touch; His passion, playfulness, excitement, and vitality: His JOY! He made a dazzling display of love. He set hearts afire. He was an elated triumphant young man with an incredible quality of life….…so different from the solemn religious types He constantly encountered."
We, too, express the JOY OF THE LORD in smiles, laughter, shouts, and good cheer, and we experience His JOY through WORSHIP, PRAISE, PRAYER AND SONG, in WITNESSING, in HELPING OTHERS, in FELLOWSHIP and DISCIPLESHIP…ALL THE PURPOSES OF THE LOCAL CHURCH. GOD CREATED SMILES AND HE CREATED LAUGHTER!
Scripture is very clear that God is infinite, eternal, immutable, illimitable, immortal, all-wise, all-knowing, all-goodness, spiritual, holy, sovereign, righteous, gracious, merciful, loving, true and HE IS JOY! When Jesus came to dwell on earth, He drew upon that JOY in becoming our Redeemer, our Savior, and our friend! JESUS, was and is truly the MAN OF JOY! "Jesu, joy of man's desiring"...
Dr. Michael MacIntosh, who wrote, The Tender Touch of God, stated that "The JOY OF THE LORD was at the tomb of the resurrected Lazarus, overshadowing the sadness and disappointment of the dead man’s sisters. JOY was there when the leper returned to thank Jesus. JOY was there when a woman caught in the very act of adultery was forgiven and released from her sin. JOY was there when the deaf heard, the blind saw, and the lame walked. JOY was there on the mountainside as the multitudes listened to the profound teachings of Jesus.
JOY was there when the little children flocked to Jesus! JOY was there when the boy gave Jesus his lunch so that HE could work a miracle and feed the thousands.
JOY was there when Jesus forgave Zacchaeus for abusing his authority. JOY was there when Jesus stood up in the boat and stopped the storm. JOY was there when dawn broke and the women knew that Jesus was resurrected from the dead.
EVERYWHERE JESUS WENT, THERE WAS JOY!"
“Be of good cheer!” He told his disciples. “There are tribulations in this life, but I have overcome the world (John 16:33) .” “Shout for joy!” “Praise Him with the clash of cymbals” “Praise Him with tambourine and dancing” “Make music to Him” “Praise Him, sun and moon” “Extol the Lord” “My heart leaps for JOY” “In Your name I will lift up my hands” “The hills are clothed with gladness” “The valleys…shout for JOY and sing.” Proverb 15:13: “A MERRY heart makes a cheerful countenance.” Proverbs 17:22: “A CHEERFUL HEART is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones!” Hebrews 12:1-3 “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…who for the JOY set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God”
JOY is not an isolated or occasional consequence of our faith. It is an integral part of our whole relationship to Jesus our Lord. The JOY OF THE LORD rises above circumstances and focuses on God! THE JOY OF THE LORD isn’t momentary! It is constant! It stays and weathers the shocks of life because Jesus also stays!
In Christ
