Brown's Daily Word 5/5/17

Praise the Lord for the way He encapsulates us with the invocation of the sunrise and the benediction of the sunset every day.  The Lord has been sending April showers during early days of May.  After the Summery days of April the weather is cooling off.  The gentle and friendly rains have been causing the spring flowers  that are blooming profusely and lingering with sweet and aromatic fragrance all around.  The tulips patches around town are still sturdy and luxuriant. Once again the farmers, ranchers, and gardeners are getting ready for another season of planting with mirthful anticipation.  I spent some time yesterday visiting the senior saints and citizens during their week-day gatherings for lunch and fellowship along with games.  It is always a blessing to listen to their stories and interface with them.  I got spend some time yesterday also with the children who come to church during the Release Time program.  Praise the Lord for these children and the faithful and devoted staff who share about Jesus and his love with them.

We praise the Lord for the life and witness of a winsome servant of Jesus who entered the Church triumphant this week.  She was 73 years old.  She was widely  described by  her family and friends as a "giver" and a "doer".   Praise the Lord for all those confess Jesus as Lord and savior and worship and serve Him in this life with joy and obedience.  When their days are accomplished on earth they will go forth to live with the sure and certain hope of  resurrection.

We are getting ready for worship and celebration this Sunday, the Lord's day. We will meet for Sunday School at 9:30 AM and for worship at 10:30, followed by a Church-wide fellowship hour.  Plan to be in the House of the Lord wherever you might be in worship and celebration.  Jesus is Risen.  He is glorified.  He is crowned with many crowns.  He is the Lamb upon the Throne.  He holds every thing in Himself.

Alice and I will be traveling to Boston this Sunday after worship.  We will be back in New York on the 24th of May.  Thank you for praying for us.  The best part of being in Boston is that we get to spend time with our grand children, Micah, Simeon, and Ada.  For us they are  the "Best of Boston".

There is a poignant and powerful passage,  recorded in John 1, "He came unto His own and His own received Him not.  But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name."  Fyodor Dostoevski’s book, "The Brothers Karamazov" is possibly the finest literature ever written by human hand.  In it is found a chapter entitled, “The Grand Inquisitor.”  Ivan Karamazov is telling his brother a story that he has just written. The setting is Spain, during the terrible Spanish Inquisition where many people were put to death by the church for almost any heretical belief — real or imagined. In the story, Christ decides to reappear on earth during the time of the Inquisition. He comes quietly and inconspicuously, but everyone recognizes him and many are excited about his appearance.  He says almost nothing, but people are drawn to him by an irresistible force.  He stretches his hand out to bless the people and they are healed as he touches them.  Christ is walking by the great Cathedral of Seville just as a child’s little coffin is brought in, with weeping parents who follow it into the church.  Inside the casket is a lifeless little girl of seven.  The child’s mother implores Christ to bring her back.  Without a word he touches the young girl and raises her from the dead.  Meanwhile, the bishop is looking on disapprovingly.  His face darkens and he orders the arrest of the Stranger.  But during the night, the Bishop descends the stairs into the cavern of the Sacred Court building where the Stranger is being held in a dark, vaulted prison.  The Bishop, who is the Grand Inquisitor, i.e. the head inquisitor who inquires in order to discover heretics, looks at Christ in the squalid cell and says, “Is it you?  You?  Do not answer, be silent... Why did you come to meddle with us?  Tomorrow I shall condemn you and burn you at the stake as the vilest of heretics, and the same people who today kissed your feet, will at the first sign from me rush to rake up the coals at your stake tomorrow.”  But the Grand Inquisitor somehow changes his mind, and the story ends with these words: “When the Inquisitor finished speaking, he waited for some time for the Prisoner’s reply.  His silence distressed him.  He saw that the Prisoner had been listening intently to him all the time, looking gently into his face and evidently not wishing to say anything in reply.  The old man would have liked him to say something, however bitter and terrible.  But [the Prisoner] suddenly approached the old man and kissed him gently on his bloodless, aged lips.  That was all his answer.  The old man gave a start.  There was an imperceptible movement at the corners of his mouth; he went to the door, opened it and said to him: ‘Go, and come no more—don’t come at all—never, never!’  And he let him out into ‘the dark streets and lanes of the city.’  The Prisoner went away.”

That is the story of our Christ-rejecting world.  It is how we treat the Lord of Heaven and Earth.  It is interesting thing that in Dostoevski’s story it is the most "religious" folk who reject Jesus.  The Bible says that the Pharisees knew that He was talking about them.  They were the religious leaders.  Even in the arena of religion God often is not welcome.  He is too radical.  He is too awesome.  His person and power are overwhelming.  We prefer a god we can understand, control and even manipulate.  In this world people seem to be more attuned to the words of such men as theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.

This is the story that originated with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, who lived in a wonderful garden paradise.  When God went away from them for awhile, they were easily convinced that it is not enough to be a tenant.  It is not good enough to be the friend of God, they wanted to be God.  The story continues today as we, like them, may begin to question the goodness of God, and desire to taste our independence.  In our ear we hear the tempter’s words: “God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God” (Genesis 3:5).  What an exhilarating thought!  We begin to look around us and we decide we want to be in control.  We throw off the control of God and cast aside restraint.  We stop worshiping the Creator and begin worshiping creation.  We kill the Giver and take his gifts.  The vineyard becomes our own.  We are still resisting and fighting God himself.“You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). We will worship anything: the sun, moon and stars; trees, rocks and water; money, sex and power — anything but the Landowner, God Himself.

“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:22-23; Matthew 21:42).  Jesus gives us the real end of the story, one that does not end in defeat, but victory.  The end of the story is found in the book of Revelation: “The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever’” (Revelation 11:15).  The Bible says, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all — how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).

Brown's Daily Word 5/2/17

It's all beautiful and glorious this morning.  The Lord blessed with a warm and wonderful day yesterday, followed in the evening by some severe thunderstorms, lightning and torrential rains.  Alice and I managed to get in a very long walk before the storms, which caused havoc and disruptions all around us.  It is written, "weeping may tarry for the night but joy comes in the morning".  .  Praise the Lord for the  torrential rains of last evening.  The ground is drenched abundantly.  The farmers , gardeners, and ranchers are ploughing the fields and harrowing the ridges, getting ready plant for another season.  I planted some ginger root the other day, and I was just checking the strawberry patch  yesterday.  It is all blooming.  The flowers are beautiful.  The forsythia has been gorgeous this season, and its neighbor, the crabapple tree, is about to burst into full bloom, dispensing its sweet fragrance.  Many of the village residents are taking great pleasure in beautifying their lawns and gardens.   When we spoke with little Lindy a couple of days ago she told us about the colors of the flowers.  While she is able to identify most colors, her favorite color is yellow.

Sunita called me yesterday and shared that she had a  very full and blessed day of celebration for her birthday.  She and Andy went out for her birthday celebration dinner, and she ordered wild boar for dinner.  I love wild boar.  My dad used hunt wild boars back in the area where I was born.  Wild boars are found most parts of the world including Siberia and, in fact, one of my young friends goes hunting for wild boars, nicknamed Razorbacks in Georgia. He shared some of the meat with me.   Praise the Lord for He made all creatures both great small .

In Disney's The Lion King Simba had run away; he was trying to run away from his past and a very scary future, so he decided to live it up, do his own thing, and just enjoy life, "hakuna matata," until Rafiki, the baboon, showed Simba his father Mufasa, who appeared to him in the sky to say, "Simba, you have forgotten me."  Simba replied, "No, how could I?"  Mufasa persisted, "You have forgotten who you are and thus have forgotten me.  You are my son.  Remember who you are."  He repeats the phrase again and again, "Remember, Simba, remember."  This is the pivotal point of the movie, in which Simba finally woke up and remembered all that his father had done for him, that his father had sacrificed his life for him, and that Simba was part of the royal family with a responsibility to live out the family name.

Jesus came, He saw, and He conquered death and grave.  He is Risen.  He is the victor.  In Him we live, move, and have our being.  He is the Alpha and Omega.  He holds everything together.  We are called to wake up to the magnificent and glorious reality of Jesus and His Resurrection from the dead.  The Lord beckons us tenderly and gently to turn to Him, to acknowledge all that He has done.  He has paid for all our sins, He gave his life to pay our debt, and He's alive.  When we see his love, we realize we don't have to run from our past.  We can run to Him with your past and, when we trust in him, he'll not only pardon us, but he'll empower us.  A new power will come into our lives for change and transformation.

One thing that excites me is I know God's Word does not return void.  The Resurrection happened.  The Resurrection matters.  In fact, it's the key to living a meaningful life.  Praise the Lord for Jesus's Resurrection Event.  It is the bedrock and the unshakable foundation of Gospel.  On Christ, the solid Rock, we stand; all other ground is sinking sand.

In Christ,

Brown

Brown's Daily Word 5/1/17

Praise the Lord for this beautiful weekend.  It has been a summer like week.  Only our Lord brings summer days in the mid-spring.  Alice and I drove along some country roads yesterday morning, gazing at the flowering trees and flying birds. Due to the unusual warm days of April, the trees are budding, brilliant, and beautiful.  I cannot but praise Jesus for the way and the manner, being the wonderful designer and the artist, He designs and decorates the  hills and dales, the mountains and valleys.  I was paying attention to the countless daffodils which created a canvas of  unending beauty that is covering the  fields and hillsides.    Praise the Lord for the way the flowers bloom with so much beauty.  We have a peach tree that we had planted few years ago.  It is getting humongous now with colorful blossoms.  Some of the azaleas and forsythia are in luxuriant  bloom.

Our daughters living in Washington, DC, our Nation's capital were telling me yesterday morning that the temperature in Washington would be reaching into the 90's.  I assured my daughters that they will be blessed with two distinctive summer seasons this years.  One is the early, premature, summer the other one is the late one.  They both will be brilliant.

I was planning to attend one of the several camp meetings back in Phulbani, Orissa, India.  These meetings are held during early summer at various strategic locations, where Christians come together for praise, worship, fellowship, and witness.  These are like the old time Methodist Camp meetings where thousands come.  The meetings are held under huge tents.  Many people cook their food over campfires.  Campfires illuminate the landscape, reminding us about  the Jewish people who dwelt in Booths.  Due to some unavoidable circumstances I had to cancel my trip.  One of the large camp meetings was held this week, which was held at the premises of the school where I attended  4th through the 7th grade.  Years later I taught in the same school.  It has been reported that the Lord visited His people during these gatherings.  The Lord was GLORIFIED and His people were anointed and blessed.

As I was visiting a gentleman the other day I walked in and asked him if he knew who I was, but at first he did not recognize me.  After I introduced myself He said, "Oh, yes, I do know you.  He said further, "You are  looking wonderful".  He further said, "You are talking wonderful too".  I took it very personally.  We had a very sweet and winsome conversation.  He said  that I can go fishing in his pond any time, and that there is a bigger pond nearby which belongs to his friend.  He said that I can fish in the big Pond, too.  If any one asks and questions me I am to tell that he sent me.  It is good to have friends in high places.  Though this friend of mine is in his nineties, his mind is sharp and his heart is warm.  As I was leaving I met woman at the front desk who shared with me that she has come down with  severe health problems.  "Jesus is taking care of me.", she said.  She said that she still works full time and has moved with her son and his family.  Praise the Lord for the way He places the solitary in the families.

Praise the Lord for one of our nephews who is a junior at the Union-Endicott High School.  He was inducted into the National Honor Society earlier this week.  Our nephew was born in India, and came to the United States after his parents immigrated to America the Beautiful legally 17 years ago.  When he came to the States he spoke no English, but now he an athlete and a scholar.

I recently talked with a young friend of our ours, who was 8 years old when we met her in June 1978.  She is married and blessed with a wonderful husband and three gorgeous children.  I officiated in her wedding.  The oldest is in college.  They all love the Lord and are involved in the ministry of their local church.   The mother of this young woman is a dear friend of ours who celebrated her 81st birthday this month. This wonderful servant of Jesus and her family took us in loved and nurtured us in our first church that we served.  We also learned about a man who was part of our first church who died today.   He was loved by his dear wife and family and their church family.

We are praying two for precious boys, both very young, who are battling with some deadly diseases.  We are praying and trusting Jesus for their healing and wellness.  The boys belong to very committed and devoted Christian families.  We are praying for the family of a man who died today battling with deadly disease with great courage.  We praying for his children, his grandchildren, and his family and friends.  We praise the Lord for family and friends, for the church, and for all the countless blessings bestowed upon us.  Praise the Lord for School and college students, who are getting ready for the end of the year, for graduations, commencements, proms, baccalaureates.  Praise the Lord for these blessings and gifts that we can celebrate.

Let us pray for the world, that is a like tinder box about to explode.  Somehow we trust, believe, and declare that Jesus in control.  Let us all come to Him and yield ourselves to His sovereign reign, rule, and authority.  Pray for the world leaders that they might seek the wisdom of the Lord as King Solomon did.  Let us pray for the persecuted, for the refugees, for the oppressed, for those who are blinded by the enemy.  Pray for those whose burdens are heavy, that they might come to Jesus, whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light.  Let us come to Jesus and live.  The world needs Jesus.  Those who are lost in the darkness need Jesus.  The dead in sin need Jesus.  Let us call upon Jesus.

The Sun has risen on this (yesterday's) Lord's Day with brilliance, and with healing in its wings.  The Lord is Risen from the grave.  He is risen, indeed.  Because Christ is Risen, life is a celebration.  Life is a time of worship.  Life is a time for thanksgiving.  At  the same time life can be a battlefield.  It is written, "But Thanks be to God who gives us the victory".  But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. 2 Corinthians 2:14  The Lord blessed us in His house yesterday in worship and fellowship. Alice and walked in the late afternoon, and Alice was naming some of the streets and lanes with such names as Daffodil Lane, Tulip Lane, or Azalea Lane.  The streets are surrounded with beautiful, blooming flowers and foliage.  As we were walking we stopped by to say hello to a  family that just moved to town.  They purchased a home in the town that had been vacant for several months.  It was beautiful and pleasant visit.  The young family is blessed with six beautiful children, whom they home school.  Lord bless their breed and brood.

Today we praise the Lord for our daughter Sunita.  She celebrates her birthday on this day.  She was born in a county seat hospital in Pennsylvania.  Alice was reminding me that it was a hot day on that special day.  It was a sunny and brilliant 80 degrees.  It is going to be warm day today here and it is going to hot day in Washington, DC where she lives.  Sunita is a blessing to us to all who know her.

Just two months from today we will gather to celebrate the retirement of my wife Alice.  You all are invited.  In a way you do not need an invitation.  You are all part of the family.  The party and the celebration will take place on Saturday the July 1, 2017 at the Marathon Civic Center.  We will gather at 4:00 PM to have time for visiting, and the dinner will be served at 5:00 PM.  Our friends and family are preparing a mega-banquet so, as they say in the South, y'all come.

He broke bread and they knew him. What an astounding source of revelation! More articulate than the words he had spoken was his breaking of bread. More vivid than his countenance was his breaking of bread. More penetrating than the scriptures he expounded was his breaking of bread.Luke 24

In Christ the Risen One.
